TRANSPORT SECTOR PROJECTS

Few projects present greater engineering and operating challenges than transport infrastructure. Considerations include site analysis, flow patterns, environmental impact, safety standards, budget constraints – along with the integration of multiple complex electrical and mechanical systems, fire and security …the list is almost endless.

Core Group has provided its commissioning management skills and experience to many leading transport construction projects, including:

Whitechapel Station, London

Core Group Whitechapel Station London project

Part of the Crossrail project, this is one of ten new stations on the Elizabeth Line and a major interchange providing connections with the London overground and underground services.

The project comprised two new 250 metre platforms built below existing railways, along with a new station concourse and ticket hall, and all associated services and support infrastructure.

Core Group were appointed by the joint venture of Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall and VINCI Construction (BBMV) to manage the MEP commissioning, assurance and integration into the wider railway systems.

In addition, we were responsible for completing the authorship and handover of the operation and maintenance manuals and site-wide documentation.

The Palestra Building, London

Core Group The Palestra Building project

Home to Transport for London and with a striking design which emphasises sustainability, this landmark building features advanced energy-efficient systems.

During the fit-out stage of this prestigious project, Core Group was employed to oversee the integration of open office environmental systems into the existing base-build mechanical and electrical systems.

To enable the building to run efficiently on a 24-hour basis, tri-generation infrastructure plant was introduced. This consists of a reciprocating engine combined heat and power (CHP) unit, running alongside a 200Kw hydrogen fuel cell, the first time this technology was used to support a commercial building in the UK.

In addition, absorption and free cooling chillers were installed to satisfy the building cooling load, complemented by wind generators and photovoltaic cells.

These and other technologies combine to give the Palestra Building one of the lowest carbon footprints of any of London's commercial buildings.

HS2 Old Oak Common station, England

Core Group HS2 Old Oak Common station project

One of four new stations in the first phase of HS2, Old Oak Common is the London interchange of this ground-breaking high-speed railway scheme.

The site is located on the existing Old Oak Common Railway Depot, bounded by the Elizabeth Line Depot to the north, the London Overground West London line to the east, the Intercity Express Programme Depot to the south and Old Oak Common Lane to the west. When complete, it will be one of the largest rail hubs in the UK.

Four lines – HS2, Great Western Main Line, Elizabeth Line and Heathrow Express – will be served by the new station, which will feature six high-speed, 450 metre sub-surface platforms, along with eight conventional surface platforms, 53 lifts and 44 escalators.

HS2 Old Oak Common Station will provide a state-of-the-art gateway to London and the wider area, with efficient intermodal interchange with rail, taxi, cycle and pedestrians. With a capacity of up to 250,000 passengers per day, the station will incorporate passenger and retail facilities, providing an exemplary customer experience.

Core Group were appointed by project managers BBVS – a joint venture between Balfour Beatty, Vinci and Systra – for commissioning validation, as well as developing the HS2 assurance processes to MEP specific systems.
