STADIUM PROJECTS

Contemporary sports stadium design and construction requires a combination of architectural innovation, cutting-edge engineering, and sensitive planning to create significant, inspiring venues with multi-functional capabilities.

Core Group has had the privilege of providing its engineering expertise to many world-class, truly iconic stadiums and sports facilities. Here are a few examples:

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London

Core Group Tottenham Hotspur Stadium project

One of the world’s finest sports facilities, this 62,850-capacity multi-purpose stadium was constructed partly on the footprint of the old White Hart Lane stadium.

Although primarily a football stadium, the pitch retracts beneath the south stand to reveal a synthetic turf field for National Football League (NFL) games, concerts, and other events.

Internally, the stadium features concourses, hospitality suites, conference and banquet areas, and media facilities, along with luxury spaces for players and their families. The Beavertown Lab Microbrewery and ‘The Goal Line Bar’ – at 65 metres the longest bar in Europe – are also located in the south stand.

Core Group was appointed by THFC to manage the commissioning process and adapt our Electronic Permit System to oversee operations at both the stadium and their training ground facility.

Olympic Stadium, London

Core Group London Olympic Stadium project

Conceived as a multi-purpose venue, this iconic stadium featured a distinctive, lightweight structure with a striking outer shell of steel, and a removable upper tier that allowed for its legacy use as the home of West Ham United football club.

Core Group deployed a site team of eight managers to match the required intensity of commissioning activities, and to cover all building services elements.

This included a complex electrical distribution network, extensive fire detection and alarm system and expansive Building Management System as well as general ventilation, cooling and heating systems.

Emirates Stadium, London

Core Group Emirates Stadium project

This state-of-the-art development by Arsenal Football Club represented one of the most complete sports arenas in Europe, combining innovative construction techniques, imaginative spatial usage and forward-thinking building services design.

Core Group deployed a team of seven managers to oversee planning, documentation, training, and witnessing, ensuring that the needs of the sponsor, client, and public expectations for quality and delivery were met ahead of the upcoming football season.

The building services included complex high- and low-voltage distribution across four substations, as well as the integration and distribution of two 1MW generators.

The design was divided into eight self-contained service cores, each equipped with two or three boilers, air-cooled chillers, HVAC systems, BMS, fire and voice alarms, and security controls, all fully integrated into the project-wide systems.

Olympic Aquatic Centre, London

Core Group London Olympic Aquatic Centre project

Upon arriving at the Olympic Park for the 2012 Olympic Games, visitors were greeted by the Aquatic Centre, distinguished by its organic curves and dynamic double-wave roof.

Designed by legendary architect Zaha Hadid, this striking venue had the capacity to accommodate up to 17,500 people.

The large volume of water inside, along with the chemicals required for sanitation, created a highly corrosive atmosphere, with internal temperatures reaching around 40°C, and humidity levels potentially hitting 100%.

Core Group's site team was responsible for ensuring that the electrical distribution networks, as well as the heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, operated effectively within this challenging environment, allowing the building to function optimally.

Ascot Racecourse, England

Core Group Ascot Racecourse project

During the complete rebuild of the racecourse grandstand at Royal Ascot Race Course, including the refurbishment of other associated buildings, Core Group was appointed by RARC to manage the commissioning of the services.

The project was led by Laing O’Rourke, and the two year completion timescale started immediately after the prestigious annual ‘Royal Ascot’ event, and began with the demolition of the old grandstand.

The building of the spectacular, all-new structure was followed by the fit out of hospitality boxes, dining and concession areas in time to host the next Royal Ascot event.

To achieve the ambitious two year target, much of the building services were constructed in modules off-site, well in advance of the start of the project. This greatly accelerated the installation and commissioning of the MEP services, and helped ensure that sufficient resources were allocated throughout the project. Many independent contractor organisations were appointed to meet the tight programme deadlines.

Along with the main grandstand reconstruction, the project scope included the refurbishment of the parade/winners area, the pavilion, stabling and equine welfare buildings.

Wembley Stadium, London

Core Group Wembley Stadium project

This prestigious development faced significant challenges during construction, and Core Group was subsequently called in to assist with the coordination, validation and closeout of services commissioning.

Core Group deployed a site team – at one stage 15 managers – to match the required intensity of commissioning activities, and to cover all building services elements.

These included a complex electrical distribution network, extensive fire detection and alarm system and expansive Building Management System as well as general ventilation, cooling and heating systems.
