MEDIA & ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY PROJECTS

Construction projects in the media industries present a very particular set of engineering challenges, typically involving dynamic, future-proof operating spaces served by multiple leading-edge technologies.

Core Group’s tried-and-texted commissioning management expertise ensures that all systems are designed, installed, operated, tested and maintained to the highest standards. Our media sector projects include:

Sky Studios, Elstree, London

Core Group Sky Studios Elstree project

The UK's newest, state-of-the-art film and TV studio facility.

Consisting of 12 separate television and film stages totalling over 37,000 square metres, this project was managed and delivered on a phased plan.

All buildings across the site were served by connected key power, water and life safety systems. This meant that an effective commissioning process was vital to the successful delivery and occupation of the facility.

Core Group were appointed by the project manager as independent commissioning and validation managers, reporting directly to the development team.

Filming requirements created pressure on the delivery programme, and in response Core Group employed a large commissioning management team, working concurrently across all buildings across the project.

National Theatre, London

Core Group National Theatre London project

A logistically challenging project at an important London landmark

Core Group played a vital commissioning management role during the development and modernisation of this iconic theatre on London’s South Bank.

A key consideration for this highly technical project was to maintain normal operations, along with day-to-day events, performances and rehearsals – therefore avoiding a negative commercial impact.

Sky Broadcast Studios, London

Core Group Sky Broadcast Studios London project

An advanced broadcast facility incorporating groundbreaking environmental features.

Sustainability and efficiency measures include: extensive natural ventilation systems; biomass combined cooling, heating and power plant; Turbocor compressor technology; and heat pump LTHW generation.

Our commissioning management team undertook the planning, coordination and validation of all building services to provide the client with a comprehensive and independent evaluation of test and commissioning activities.

Core Group deployed a site team of ten managers to cover all building services elements including test definition and management of the complex power resilience strategy, along with the associated integrated systems testing.

AELTC Media Centre, Wimbledon, London

Core Group AELTC Media Centre Wimbledon project

The purpose-built Media Centre is part of a large-scale regeneration by the All England Lawn Tennis Club of their Wimbledon campus.

This building provides a dedicated facility for the world’s media during the annual Lawn Tennis Championships, and includes numerous interview rooms, an auditorium and state-of-the-art broadcasting facilities. It has been designed so that live interviews can take place from upper and lower roofs, providing sweeping views of the grounds, including Centre Court and No.1 Court.

Additionally, a technical services room has been created to enable individual broadcasters to connect their equipment within the dedicated space. The air-conditioned building includes bio-solar roofs, power resilience, and features the active management of building services to help reduce energy usage.

Core Group had a split appointment for the commissioning management and validation between the client AELTC and main contractor Knight Harwood respectively.

Bluefin Building, IPC Media, Southbank, London

Bluefin Building Southbank London project

The UK’s leading consumer magazine publisher relocated to the striking Southbank complex located behind the landmark Tate Modern gallery.

The high quality fit-out of Southbank 1 provided IPC Media with innovative, flexible office space, photographic studios, kitchens and other facilities used in the production of over 80 IPC magazine titles.

The stunning architecture, including a ground to roof atrium, is often used as a location by film production companies.

Core Group were appointed by ISG Ltd to provide commissioning management for the fit-out of this prestigious media company building.

BBC New Broadcasting House, London

Core Group BBC New Broadcasting House project

The refurbishment and rebuilding of two landmark BBC buildings.

The first phase of the refurbishment of the historic BBC buildings in London’s West End, the project comprised a complete refurbishment and updating of Broadcasting House – the world’s first purpose-built radio production centre opened in 1932 – and a full rebuild of Egton House, containing the first of two energy centres.

The stunning façade of the original Broadcasting House is retained in its original state. The iconic BBC Radio Theatre is also restored to its original condition, whilst being brought into the digital age with a complete refurbishment of the Studio Tower and office floors.

With large generators in the basement and underground Tube lines beneath them, the construction of Egton House presented unique engineering challenges. Stringent acoustic requirements for the new studios were achieved by mounting the entire building on a bed of anti-vibration springs.

Core Group were appointed by Bovis Lendlease to manage the services commissioning, along with complex integrated testing of the combined building services in preparation for Phase 2 of the London BBC centre.

London Museum, Smithfield, London

Core Group London Museum Smithfield project

The re-purposing of an historic London landmark.

The Victorian Smithfield Market is to be the new home of the Museum of London in 2026.

Neglected for more than thirty years, the Market buildings were in a bad state of repair, with water penetrating in all areas.

Works began in 2022, and will include maintaining the impressive Grade I listed façade, whilst reconfiguring the internal areas of the Poultry and General markets to house artefacts and a massive archaeological archive – collections that showcase the lives and stories of Londoners over 450,000 years.

New MEP systems have been designed aesthetically to enhance the environment, whilst monitoring and controlling the critical temperature and humidity required to preserve the precious and sensitive collection.

Core Group was appointed for the commissioning management by Sir Robert McAlpine.
